We follow The Haven on Facebook and are always licking our lips when we see their scrumptious cakes appearing on our newsfeed. A couple of weeks ago we made it in for a visit and enjoyed very tasty breakfasts.
We were (supposed) to be on Moonwalk duty, providing a wee bit of support and back up for my cousin Claire who was doing “over the moon” – the double moonwalk of 52 miles overnight. Yip that’s right you have to walk round the 26 mile course twice!
After a quick catch up with Claire to provide her with some juice at mile 40 along Cramond foreshore we headed to Portobello for the next rendezvous. It was Sunday morning, we had been up early and skipped breakfast so what better excuse than to stop off at The Haven for breakfast and cake.
The Haven is situated between Newhaven and Ocean Terminal and has a big mural along the side of the building so you can’t really miss it. We managed to find a car parking space just around the back, and there seemed to be quite a few spaces available.
It was 9.30am on a Sunday morning, we were the early birds -or so we thought! Not so, the place was packed with only the window bar free. This turned out perfect as we could keep an eye out for Claire passing. It was a bit cruel, us sitting there enjoying a wonderful breakfast when she had been walking all night long. We didn’t feel so bad as Claire’s sister, Jennifer, arrived to walk the final 10K with her to keep her company.

We were quickly settled into the window bar and the menus arrived quickly. I think we both had our heart set on a full breakfast so I chose the all day breakfast and Raymond opted for the vegetarian version.
The full on meat version includes, bacon, sausage, black pudding, haggis, fried egg, tomato, mushrooms, beans, tattie scone, toast and tea or coffee – all for a staggering £6.95. I was expecting to pay extra for the tea and coffee, but they are included in the overall £6.95…..great value!

The vegetarian selection comes with veggie sausage, veggie haggis, fried egg, tomato, mushrooms, beans, tattle scone, toast and tea or coffee – again £6.95.

The breakfasts were absolutely delicious and it’s great to be able to see your breakfast being freshly cooked just behind the front counter. The staff work hard and service was excellent.
If you fancy a bite to eat, but not a full breakfast then don’t worry! The menu offers lots of other options such as eggy bread and bacon (£5), and porridge with honey and berries (£2.50). We will definitely visit again in the near future to try these out.
We had fully planned to sample the cakes after all the Facebook temptation, but after eating the full breakfast we were completely stuffed! In the interests of research we popped up to the cake counter for some cake porn and to lick the glass! (we didn’t really!) The Victoria Sponge with fresh strawberries looked amazing and was disappearing fast!

The traybake – A little taste of Haven – looked like a challenge, but a good challenge! When we got to Portobello we were wishing we had taken a slice with us! Never mind – it gives another good reason to go back.

If you are looking for a fabulous breakfast, or just tea and cake be sure to pop in. We recommend liking The Haven on Facebook so that you can keep up to date with all their news…..oh and all the pictures of their delicious cakes.
PS. We almost missed Claire and Jennifer at Portobello they were walking so fast….good job we didn’t have cake! Claire finished the 52.4 mile Over the Moon Walk in 12hrs and 45 minutes, a personal best and amazing achievement.
