We were heading to The Edinburgh Playhouse to see Wicked and were looking for somewhere close by for a pre theatre meal.

Steak and Fish and 12 Picardy Place |
Having dined previously at Steak, and thoroughly enjoying it we decided to try its sister restaurant Fish Eatery and Skippers Lounge at Picardy Place. Fish opened this year and seats 46 diners in lovely high ceiling rooms complete with cosy gas fire.
The restaurant sources all it’s fish from Gary Welch, a family run fishmonger in Edinburgh since 1959, so you would expect the fish to be top notch.
Later in the evening Fish Eatery serves a wonderful range of fish dishes from its main menu and we plan to go back to sample its delights. I can’t wait to try the Cullen Skink.
Prior to 6.30pm, they offer a pre theatre menu for £10 per person which is tremendous value (but don’t tell them that!) A choice of 3 Main courses are on offer for £10. Moules Frites, Steak Frites or a Fish Tea.

The Fish Tea |
We haven’t had a Fish Tea in ages so it attracted our attention! The fish tea comes with lovely bread and butter, followed by Fish, Chips and Mushy Peas and then a cup of tea. The bread was homemade and delicious. Make sure that you leave some for when your fish arrives! We devoured ours in no time at all it was so tasty.
The service at Fish is excellent, and our fish arrived quickly; perfect for a pre theatre meal where time can be short. The fish was a good size, not massive, but quite sufficient, and was served with mushy peas, half a lemon and a bucket of fries. The bucket of fries is quite deceiving and holds plenty of frites so perfect for the chip lover! The fish batter was extremely thin and crisp and encased the fresh fish perfectly. No soggy undercooked batter here.

Bucket of Fries |
Having a sweet tooth, we were also tempted by the desserts! This was a birthday celebration after all! Raymond got tickets for Wicked for my birthday almost 1 year ago, so this was to be my last birthday treat of 2014. Looking at the desert menu, it definitely had potential!

Cheesecake |
I decided to go with the rice pudding which was wonderfully creamy. There’s nothing quite like a delicious rice pudding complete with skin and delicious fruits on a cold winters night. Raymond opted for the Mandarin and Nut cheesecake which was amazing! I even managed to get a wee taste!

If you are heading to The Playhouse and are looking for a bite to eat beforehand, Fish Eatery would be hard to beat, for food quality, price and location. Similarly if you are a fish lover and are looking for a classy, high quality restaurant serving excellent fish dishes, we are confident that the full evening menu will delight, but we can’t wait to return in the new year to confirm this!
