Fish and Chips in Oban Bay…..
What a cracker of a weekend, we picked to visit the West Highlands.
After sitting outside next to Mallaig Harbour for lunch we decided to head across the Corran Ferry and head to Oban for Dinner as it was such a beautiful night.
Oban is smaller than we remember, and I should remember as I used to spend 2 days a week working in the beautiful town.
After a wander round we decided that we would have fish and chips by the bay.  With plenty of options to choose from we decided on The Oban Bay Fish and Chip restaurant, as the name suggests, looking over Oban bay.
Much debate occurs locally about which Fish and Chip shop can claim the title of best Fish and Chips in Oban.  According to my mum, we didn’t pick the best one, so will just have to return another time to try the rest.
We arrived not long after 5pm and the restaurant had a few tables taken but was starting to fill up quite quickly.  The staff were welcoming and showed us to our table towards the back of the restaurant, so sadly not a great view from there on this beautiful evening.
The menu is quite extensive, but we decided to stick to a Fish Tea, with Bread and Butter and a cup of tea!

The fish and chips were very good and tasted extremely fresh.  There is a Takeaway connected to the restaurant so this place has a high volume turnover of fish suppers!
Each table had a supply of sauces and vinegars.  As you will see from  the picture the stand says “Has to be Heinz.”  I would agree, however each stand was filled with cheap cash and carry alternatives.  If you have a Heinz stand you should be stocking Heinz Sauces.  They are more expensive but you can really taste the difference.
The other disappointment was the bread and butter.  The bread was the cheapest of cheap,  thin white bread with some sort of spread – not butter.  The whole meal would have been enhanced with good quality bread and butter.

All in all a nice Fish Tea, not the best in Oban, it seems, but very nice all the same.
If you are visiting Oban be sure to visit Skippinish Ceilidh House for a taste of West Coast music.
